How To Make a Backyard Canopy

How To Jun 28, 2026

I love a roadside find, especially when I can immediately see the potential in it! I found this simple storage box on the side of the road and decided to turn it into a cosy little outdoor nook for our backyard. It was such a simple upcycle, and I love how practical it is too – the storage box still gives us plenty of space to tuck things away underneath! I used my Bosch tools and Tacker to make this and it worked so well!

What I used

For this project I used:

Making the Upholstered Canopy

I wanted to make the most of the storage box I already had, adding a timber cushioned seat and soft fabric canopy to turn it into a comfy little backyard escape.

  1. I removed the lid of the storage box and started by covering the box with foam, using the Bosch staple gun to secure it in place.
  2. I then repeated the process with the fabric, wrapping it around the box, trimming away any excess with scissors and stapling it securely in place.
  3. For the seat, I covered a timber plank with foam before wrapping it in the same fabric and stapling it underneath for a neat finish.
  4. To create the canopy, I attached two timber planks to the fence and stapled the fabric to them. I secured the other end of the fabric to the back of the box, then draped it over a tree branch and secured it in place.

Such a simple background edition! It’s practical, comfy and has quickly become one of my favourite places to sit outside with a book!
