How I Made Our Light Shelf

Home DIY Aug 27, 2025

I’ve been wanting to do something with this little space in our bedroom for a while. It felt like the perfect spot to add some extra storage, but I didn’t want to add a shelf just for the sake of practicality,  I wanted it to feel like a feature in the room too.

After asking you guys what you thought I should do with the space, so many of you suggested art, shelving or a light. So naturally, I thought… why not all three?  Usually it’s so hard to level and centre this type of project in the room, but luckily I had my Bosch DIY measuring tools, which made it so easy!

Designing the Shelf

I decided to build a simple custom shelf that would fit perfectly into the space, with a few different sections for books, art and little objects.

Rather than trying to make it disappear into the room, I went in the opposite direction and painted the whole thing red. I love how much warmth and personality the colour brings to the bedroom. Sometimes a relatively small pop of colour can completely change how a space feels.

My favourite detail, though, has to be the little light I added inside one of the shelves. It turns what could have been a very simple storage piece into something that feels much more custom and considered. Plus, it gives the nicest glow at night!

Getting the Measurements Right

Because this shelf was being made specifically for this spot, getting the measurements right was really important. I used the Bosch laser measure to measure the space and work out the dimensions of the shelf before building it.

Once it was time to install everything, I used the Bosch Atino laser level to make sure the shelf was sitting perfectly straight. These are the sorts of tools that make such a difference with projects like this – particularly when you’re trying to line up shelves, artwork or anything else where being slightly off can be really noticeable.

Styling the Finished Shelf

Once everything was installed, I added a few books, objects and pieces of art to make the shelves feel layered without overcrowding them. I love the combination of the red shelving, the artwork and that little pool of light — it makes this previously unused corner feel like a proper feature of the bedroom.

I’m so happy with how this one came together. It’s practical, gives us some much-needed extra storage, but still feels creative and interesting — which is always my favourite kind of DIY!
