I’m all about browsing through op shop treasures, especially those old photo frames with their unique textures and details. But let’s be real, the art inside usually doesn’t do it for me so I’m using them to create upcycled painted artwork.
I am back with another Aisle Upcycle project – the series where I upcycle projects from trash into treasure using what I can find in the aisles at Bunnings! And this one comes in handy, finding a second life for those frames with broken glass or a bit worse for wear and giving them a new lease on life. I actually found these on the side of the road, but you could use any secondhand frame you like.
Materials:
- Old artwork frames
- Wrapping paper or scrapbooking paper
- Different paint samples
- Small and medium paint brushes
How to create Upcycled Painted Artwork:

Then I selected the flower or pattern on the scrapbooking or wrapping paper that I wanted to feature in the middle of the frame. Starting with a small paint brush, I carefully outlined the feature flower, then I used the medium paint brush to paint the rest of the paper.

Next I painted both the frame and matboard of the photo frames the same colour to match the artwork.

Once it was all dry, I assembled the artwork into the frame and hung it as a little collection of 3 frames on the wall.
